The 95th Street Business Association recently had the opportunity to meet with the team from A New Direction (AND), a program of WINGS dedicated to supporting survivors of domestic violence in the Beverly, Morgan Park, Mount Greenwood, and surrounding communities.
We were inspired to learn about the wide range of services they provide, including crisis intervention, safety planning, counseling, legal advocacy, resource referrals, financial education, and employment support. Their work helps individuals and families rebuild their lives while creating safer, stronger communities.
Why This Matters to Businesses
Domestic violence doesn’t stay at home. It can impact the workplace through attendance, productivity, and employee well-being. That’s why it’s important for employers to be familiar with the Illinois Victims’ Economic Security and Safety Act (VESSA).
VESSA provides eligible employees with certain workplace protections and leave to address issues related to domestic violence, sexual violence, gender violence, or other qualifying crimes. It also requires employers to maintain confidentiality and, in some situations, provide reasonable accommodations.
Knowing about these protections before they’re needed can help employers respond with compassion while remaining compliant with state law.
Support a Great Cause
A New Direction’s annual fundraiser will be held on Sunday, September 13, from 3:00–7:00 p.m. at Cork & Kerry (10614 S. Western Ave.). The afternoon will feature live music by Second Hand News, drinks, appetizers, and an opportunity to support the organization’s life-changing work for survivors of domestic violence.
Whether you’re looking to attend, sponsor the event, or simply learn more about the services available in our community, we encourage you to connect with A New Direction and WINGS. Together, we can help create safer workplaces and a stronger community for everyone.
